Filipino Sinigang (The Healthiest Stew You'll Ever Eat!)

Sinigang is one of the most popular dishes in Philippine culture. A lot of people call this sour soup, It is a counterpart of Thailand’s famous soup Tom Yam due to its sour taste. Sinigang is known for its fresh, healthy ingredients. Traditionally, sinigang is usually cooked with pork.  However, depending on the region, healthier seafood-based alternatives are often used.   Best of all is that this recipe takes just 30 minutes to prep and cook!

Prep time: 15 mins

Cooking time: 15 mins

Total time: 30 mins

  • 2 pcs Medium Roma Tomato, cut in pieces
  • 1 Medium White Onion, cut into 4 slice
  • 2 cups of spinach
  • 1-2 cups of long beans, cut 2 inches in each string
  • 3-4 cups of water
  • 2 lbs Catfish
  • Real tamarind or tamarind powder (Sinigang Mix)
  • Anaheim or any green chile pepper (Optional)
  • Salt (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place water in cooking pot, add onion, tomato & bring to boil
  2. Add tamarind or sinigang mix once it reach to boiling point then add the catfish
  3. add the rest of the ingredients: long breans, spinach and the green chile pepper and Simmer for 2 mins.
  4. Serve with rice while hot and steaming!!

Tips:

  • You can substitute tamarind powder if fresh tamarind is not available.
  • Instead of catfish (Hito), you can try shrimp, or even milkfish (Bangus), which contains Omega-3s and is great for the heart.
