8 Tips So Glucose Fingerpricks Hurt Less

Checking blood sugar is important, but fingerpricks don’t have to be painful! Follow these simple tips to reduce discomfort and protect your fingertips.

  1. Use the Sides of Your Fingers: Prick the sides, not the center. The center has more nerve endings, making it more painful.
  2. Rotate Fingers: Use a different finger each time to avoid soreness. Try not to use the same spot repeatedly.
  3. Lower the Lancet Depth: Most lancing devices have depth settings. A shallower setting (lower number) is often enough and hurts less.
  4. Warm Your Hands First: Cold hands make it harder to get blood, leading to deeper pricks. Wash with warm water or rub hands together before testing.
  5. Don’t Squeeze Too Hard: Gently milk the finger from the base instead of squeezing the tip hard. Too much pressure can cause bruising.
  6. Use a Fresh Lancet Each Time: Reusing a lancet makes it dull, which increases pain. A sharp, fresh lancet reduces discomfort.
  7. Don’t use alcohol wipes: Wash and thoroughly dry your hands instead. Alcohol wipes can dry out and tighten the skin, making it harder for the lancet to poke through.
  8. Apply Pressure After Pricking: Hold a tissue or cotton ball on the site for a few seconds to prevent soreness.

The finger has fewer nerve endings on the sides, and a shallow, quick poke hurts far less than a slow, deep one. Most people are surprised how little it hurts once they adjust these settings. With these tips, fingerpricks can be much more comfortable! Keep up the great work managing your health. 😊
